that this pub is so old that the famous diarist Samuel Pepys sat in it and watched the Great Fire of London as it gradually destroyed the north bank of the River Thames in 1666? It became the tap room to the Anchor Brewery, one of Southwark's oldest breweries based in Park Street at the back of the pub.
