..why Mount Street Gardens is so high up? When the land was first developed in the 1720s, it was a burial ground but by the mid 1800s, there were so many dead bodies buried in central London that any more were considered a risk to public health. So further burials in the centre of town were banned and the burial ground became the beautiful gardens they are today. BUT they were built on top of the burial ground!!
